Repairing Leaks in Your Roof

Repairing Leaks in Your Roof

Having a leak in your roof can be very irritating because when it rains there is a constant dripping of water into your home, not to mention those ugly water stains on your ceilings.  There are many things that can cause your roof to leak from gaps or cracks that have formed on the roof’s shingles, shingles missing or damaged due to high winds or hail, having gaps or blisters that have formed along your vent, flashing, or chimney, or even a cracked area on the flat roof.  If it is a small leak you may be able to repair it yourself without hiring a roofing service to do the repair or replacing your entire roof.  If you notice a leak it is important to fix it as soon as possible so it does not cause more or continual damage to the rest of your roof and your ceiling.

Before you start to repair the leak on your roof you need to make sure that you have the right materials which include a hammer, pieces of dry cloth, a trowel, roofing cement, nails, and roof patching fabric, knife, and a metal bristled brush.  Once you make sure that you have all the necessary materials to fix the leak it is now time to find out exactly where the leak is.  When climbing up to the roof you need to make sure that you have a good sturdy ladder to climb on. Crawl around on the roof looking for any tears or cracks.  If you know where the general area of the roof that is leaking by where it is dripping in the house, you can just check that area of the roof for the leak.

If the crack is by the vent, flashings, or chimney remove them so you can get to the leak better in order to repair it.  If there is any tar or cement on the area remove it along with any dust or dirt using the metal wire brush.  You can use the piece of dry cloth to wipe up any water that has collected in the spot.  Fill in any cracks or gaps using the roofing cement, applying it with the trowel.  To ensure that it is not going to leak, look for any other cracks or gaps and fill those in with the roofing cement.

If there are some shingles that are causing the leaks you need to peel them off their edges very gently, apply the roofing cement and fill in the gap where it is leaking.  If there happen to be any extra nails you need to take them out and replace them.  If there are any cracks in the rubber sheathing you can also repair the cracks by putting on roofing cement.  You can even apply a couple of extra patches on the cracks to keep it from leaking in the future.

If you do decide to call in a roofing service to fix the leak it can cost between one hundred fifty to eight hundred dollars, depending on the severity of the leak, how long it takes to fix it, and what needs to be done to fix the leak.
